Topics include: nation-building, Japan and the West, Japan and Asia (for the Meiji period 1868-1912); gender construction and class formation, urbanization and mass culture (for the Taisho period 1912-1926); and Japanese colonialism, WWII, A-bomb, the U.S. occupation, postwar recovery, popular culture, and globalization (for the Showa period 1926-1989 and beyond).
